How to care for your life jacket
A life jacket is a critical piece of boating equipment.  It can mean the difference between life and death.  While no one wants to consider worst-case scenarios, taking care of your life jacket will ensure your safety and prolong the life of the jacket. Following the guidelines below will help:
  • Allow your life jacket to drip dry after use before storing in a ventilated are.  This will prevent mold and mildew.

  • Do not leave life jackets in direct sunlight.  This may cause the fibers and fabric to deteriorate.
  • Many life jackets can be washed by hand with a mild detergent.  Check the label of your life jacket for specific care/washing instructions.
  • Be sure to wear a life jacket that fits properly.  An improper fit can mean the difference between life and death.
  • Check your life jacket regularly for tears or fading.  Make sure the seams and fabric are secure.
  • Do not use a PFD for anything other than its intended use (on your body).  Using it as a cushion, bumper, etc can cause the contents to breakdown and reduce buoyancy.
  • Check the buoyancy of the life jacket annually.  Make sure your chin is above water and your head is kept afloat.
