The Safegard Corporation began operations in 1954 found by Messrs. Hageman & Weber as a home decorative products manufacturer sewing curtains, pillows, and cushions. The company was a major player in this market during the “department store” era having a factory of over 300 seamstresses. Using kapok as the primary filling material, Safegard began work with the U.S. Navy during the 1950s, designing and manufacturing the innovative “Mae West” PFD.
From the 1970s through the 1990s, the Sammis family led Safegard’s expansion beyond military work by developing a line of products for the commercial fishing and whitewater marketplaces. By the turn of the century, Safegard found itself as a major PFD manufacturer covering many bases but not deep in any market. Additionally, its domestic manufacturing approach was quickly losing ground as the competitors were making product overseas and selling to the “big box” retailers.
In 2003, Barry Hackett took over the reigns to lead the company in dealing with overseas production and niche marketing. Today, Safegard continues to operate a lean business focusing on multiple niche markets by providing the highest in quality, customer service and innovative products. Safegard’s goal is to continue growing our presence in the commercial, government, whitewater, canoe/kayak, and general boating markets by providing exceptional service and quality products.
